Polio Virus

Inactivated or attenuated polio virus are used in vaccines. The flow scheme shows a typical purification process for polio virus. The original work is described by A.L. van Wezel in DEVELOPMENTS IN BIOLOGICAL STANDARDIZATION (1979), 42, 65-69.

Today similar processes use Sepharose™ 6 Fast Flow and anion exchangers based on Sepharose™ Fast Flow. The first part of the process, cross flow filtration and gel filtration on Sepharose, is a generic approach for purification of large molecular weight entities such as viruses and plasmids.
